Boeing and St. Louis Community College Host Composite Materials Workshop for Local Boy Scouts

Boeing, the Center for Workforce Innovation at St. Louis Community College, and the Boy Scouts of the Greater St. Louis Area, combined forces to develop the inaugural Composite Materials Workshop on Saturday, April 7, 2018.
With the leadership of Jay Byington from Boeing and Becky Epps of the Center for Workforce Innovation, they organized a team of professional to instruct 40 Scouts at the workshop. The event from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and the Scouts got exposed to the hazards of dealing with composite materials, how to handle them and be safe. They learned the variety of materials available and their similarities. They were introduced to various resins and how they are used with composite materials.
From there, they got knowledge on products made from composite materials. Lastly, the Scouts got the chance to work on two hands-on projects. One being a foam wing foil and instructed on how they shape wings similar to what happens in a Boeing factory. The second project, making their own hiking staff from composite materials and resin.
To wrap up the session, the Scouts learned about the careers that you can find in composite materials and had a great group of instructors hear about those. The facilities at the Center were to ideal and proved to be a fantastic learning environment. It was a successful first run and we look forward to seeing the workshop happen again soon for another group of curious Scouts.
