Mathy Stanislaus, assistant administrator for the Environmental Protection Agency, will be in St. Louis to make a significant announcement related to EPA’s support of local green jobs training through the Agency’s Environmental Workforce Development and Job Training (EWDJT) grants program.

Stanislaus, the top official of EPA’s Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response, will make the announcement as part of his comments to new graduates of St. Louis Community College’s Environmental Remediation Job Training program. The job training program at STLCC has received four prior grant awards from EPA’s EWDJT program.

The ceremony is slated 10 a.m.-noon Friday, May 22, at STLCC’s William J. Harrison Education Center, 3140 Cass Ave.

STLCC expects to graduate 10 students from its program. Each will come away with 224 hours of core training in a broad spectrum of environmental job skills, ranging from hazardous waste remediation to construction safety to stormwater management. Students also earn a total of 19 federal, state or college-level certifications that help them qualify for employment in a variety of environmental fields.

EPA’s EWDJT Grants program supports training programs, like the one at STLCC, that recruit, train and place unemployed and under-employed residents of waste-affected communities with the skills and certifications needed to secure sustainable employment in the environmental field.

Through its Environmental Remediation Job Training program, STLCC has trained 310 students since 2000. More than 75 percent of those students have been placed in the job market, in specialized “in-demand” positions, earning average hourly wages of $15.70.
