Patient Care Technician Program to Receive NCWE Award

St. Louis Community College’s patient care technician accelerated job training program has earned the National Council for Workforce Education’s 2012 Exemplary Program Award for a Noncredit Workforce Development Program.

The program was selected from applications received from across the nation. The award will be presented to STLCC at the NCWE Annual Conference Oct. 21-23 in Long Beach, Calif.

Patient care technician is the most successful accelerated job training program that is offered by the STLCC Workforce Solutions Group. The program has key local industry partners, strong enrollment, constant demand and a job placement rate of 86 percent.

Industry partners include two of the largest hospital systems in the region — BJC Healthcare and SSM Healthcare, with St. Luke’s Hospital being recently added as a third partner.

To date 111 students have completed the program, with 95 students finding employment with one of the program’s industry partners. The program currently is funded through Training for Tomorrow, a state community development block grant and Graduate! St. Louis, a U.S. Department of Labor grant. With the current funding streams, there is no cost to qualifying students to attend the training.

STLCC’s patient care technician accelerated training program has earned the National Council for Workforce Education’s 2012 Exemplary Program Award for a noncredit workforce development program.

The program, which combines five weeks of intensive classroom instruction with three weeks of clinical practice, prepares individuals for entry-level positions as patient care technicians in local hospitals. The training also satisfies the requirement of the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services for unlicensed assistive personnel. Classroom activities are conducted at St. Louis Community College, while the clinical portion of the training takes place at the partnering hospital sites.

The Workforce Solutions Group works with the program’s key hospital system partners to incorporate each of their core values and mission into customized sessions of the program. The industry partners also help establish the applicant screening criteria for their specific session of the program.

The curriculum was developed with input from BJC Healthcare, St. Louis Children’s Hospital along with WorkKeys profiles that utilized input from incumbent patient care technicians from both hospitals. The curriculum then was tested in a training pilot at both employer partners for validity. The curriculum continues to grow in demand not only from local industry partners that want to start a program on site, but also because of high interest from individuals who want to enroll in the program.
