As the lead institution in Missouri for Global Corporate College, St. Louis Community College has been selected to deliver classes leading to a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Homeland Security Certificate for transportation security officers (TSOs) at the TSA’s St. Louis office. TSOs that complete the courses also will have the opportunity to earn an associate degree in homeland security or a related field.

Global Corporate College is a nonprofit consortium of community colleges that provides customized, targeted corporate training through a unique network of colleges and college systems across the nation and abroad.

St. Louis was selected along with 23 other locations, which includes airports and GCC community college members. Under this contract, STLCC will offer a series of three credit courses, with new students beginning the series every semester. The course topics include an Introduction to Homeland Security, Transportation and Border Security, and Intelligence Analysis and Security Technology. The first course in the series, Introduction to Homeland Security, started Sept. 28 on-site at the TSA St. Louis office with 20 participants.

“We are extremely pleased to partner with St. Louis Community College and offer this tremendous educational opportunity to our work force. Our employees are excited about being able to earn college credits that are directly related to their important mission,” said Bill Switzer, federal security director for St. Louis.

“This program has the potential over time to build a pool of up to 300 degree-seeking students for St. Louis Community College,” said Rod Nunn, STLCC’s vice chancellor for workforce and community development. “Thanks to our academic leaders who moved quickly to approve these courses, we continue to show market responsiveness in our efforts to grow talent in St. Louis.”

Marcia Pfeiffer, Ph.D., president of STLCC’s Florissant Valley campus, said: “Individuals who complete the program and then go on to earn an associate degree will have many opportunities for professional advancement.”

After fall 2010, the initial group of students will take the second course in the series, while the introductory course will be offered to a new group of employees. The third semester, STLCC will offer sections of all three courses with enrollment of 60 or more, with classes being held at the college’s Florissant Valley campus, on-site at TSA or a combination of both. By the third semester, the first group of participants also will be completing the course series and earning their TSA Homeland Security Certificates.
